Avenue Marsh Restoration
Norton Inlet, Jamaica Bay, Far Rockaway, New York |
Excavated 10,000 C.Y. from a filled former wetland. Screened construction
debris from the sand and disposed of the debris off site. Established
an upland dune community with the excavated, screened clean sand.
This was part of a value engineering proposal. A low and high

Twin
Island Marsh Restoration
Orchard Beach, Bronx, New York |
Excavated a marsh that was historically filled to remove an
encroaching Phragmites australis monoculture and re-establish
a functional low and high salt marsh. As part of a value engineering
proposal the dredge material was used on site to cover an old
building site. This site was then seeded with native grasses
and wildflowers and a pedestrian trail designed and installed
for park use.

Restored over 150 acres of low and high salt marsh community using
both seeding and vegetative planting techniques. Constructed a
200 Acre Salt Marsh as a mitigation bank for the sale of wetland
credits in northern Essex County, NJ. The project is split into
three phases. Phase I and Phase II have been constructed. The
project involved excavation of the existing Phragmites marsh,
building islands with the spoil, and planting a new low marsh
dominated by Spartina alterniflora and high marsh dominated by

Joline
Avenue Wetland Restoration
Staten Island, New York |
Created a fresh water palustrine plant community in an existing
abandoned construction site on Staten Island. The approved plan
was modified and field adjusted with NYDEC approval. Vernal pools
were excavated and connected to the surface water flow through
the wetlands. Plant material selection was adapted to the specifics
of the final grading plan and long-term succession of the appropriate
plant community.

Meadow
Lake Restoration
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania |
Owner: Fairmont Park Commission
(City of Philadelphia)
Designer: Bio-Habitats,
Timonium, MD
Design/build project teamed with Bio-Habitats
of Timonium, Md. Demolished an old municipal concrete swimming
pool, generating approximately 3,000 C.Y. of rubble fill. Rubble
fill was used to raise an adjacent ball field area. Approximately
12,000 C.Y. of fill material was excavated and used to cap the
concrete fill. This was then re-topsoiled and seeded for future
park use. The excavated portion was joined back into existing
Meadow Lake, graded and planted to establish a fresh water marsh
ecosystem as a wildlife habitat area within the park.

Brookhaven
National Laboratories
Brookhaven, New York |
Owner: Brookhaven National Laboratory
Designer: The Louis Berger
Group, Inc., East Orange, NJ
In 2004, the Dawson Corporation was hired by
Louis Berger Associates to restore 16 acres of the headwaters
of the Peconic River at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The soils were contaminated over the past half century, and
an Environmental contractor was brought in to excavate and remove
the contaminated soil. Under Berger's guidance, Dawson salvaged
plants from disturbed areas and stored them in makeshift nurseries;
later returning them to the site after remediation was completed.
The project was accomplished in two phases over two years.
